How to Prep Your Paint for Ceramic Coating

The most critical step in the coating process. Learn how to achieve a perfectly clean surface for maximum coating adhesion.

Paint preparation is the foundation of every successful ceramic coating application. Skip this step, and even the best coating will fail prematurely. Do it right, and your coating will bond perfectly and last for years.

Critical Truth

Ceramic coatings bond at the molecular level with your clear coat. Any contamination-wax, oils, iron particles, or even fingerprints-creates a barrier that prevents proper adhesion. The coating may look fine initially but will begin failing within months.

Step 1: Paint Inspection

Before you start washing, take time to assess what you're working with. This helps you plan your approach and identify potential problem areas.

What to Look For

  • Swirl marks and scratches: These will be locked in by the coating
  • Water spots: May need polishing to remove completely
  • Overspray: Industrial fallout that clay may not remove
  • Rail dust: Tiny orange spots, especially on white cars
  • Previous wax/sealant: Must be completely stripped

Inspection Tools

Pro Tip: The Bag Test

Put your hand in a plastic bag and gently glide it over the paint. You'll feel every bump and rough spot that needs to be removed. A properly decontaminated surface should feel as smooth as glass.

02

Deep Cleaning Wash

This isn't your typical maintenance wash. We're stripping everything off the paint to create a bare surface.

The Two-Bucket Method

  1. Fill wash bucket with pH-neutral soap and water
  2. Fill rinse bucket with clean water only
  3. Place grit guards in both buckets
  4. Start from the roof and work down
  5. Rinse mitt in rinse bucket after each panel
  6. Reload soap from wash bucket
  7. Rinse vehicle thoroughly from top to bottom

Wheel Wells & Lower Panels

These areas collect the most contamination. Use a dedicated brush and wash these areas first to avoid transferring grime to your wash mitt.

Pro Tip: Dawn Dish Soap?

While Dawn can strip wax, it's harsh on trim and seals. Use a dedicated car shampoo with strong cleaning power instead. It's safer and just as effective.

03

Chemical Decontamination

Chemical decontaminants dissolve contaminants that washing can't remove. This step is essential for a truly clean surface.

Iron Remover (Fallout Remover)

Iron particles from brake dust and rail transport embed in your paint. An iron remover dissolves these particles so they can be rinsed away.

  1. Work on a cool, wet surface
  2. Spray iron remover liberally across the surface
  3. Wait 3-5 minutes (don't let it dry)
  4. Watch for purple reaction (iron dissolving)
  5. Rinse thoroughly with water
  6. Repeat if heavy contamination remains

Tar Remover

Tar and asphalt spots need a solvent-based cleaner. Apply to affected areas, let dwell for 1-2 minutes, then wipe away.

Trim Warning

Iron removers can stain unpainted trim if left too long. Work in sections and rinse thoroughly. If staining occurs, it usually fades within a few days.

04

Clay Bar Treatment

Clay removes the final layer of bonded contamination that chemicals can't dissolve. This is what creates that glass-smooth finish.

Clay Process

  1. Knead the clay into a flat disc
  2. Spray clay lubricant on a 2x2 foot section
  3. Glide clay across the surface in straight lines
  4. Feel the surface-it should become smooth
  5. Knead clay to expose clean surface as needed
  6. Wipe dry with microfiber towel
  7. Repeat until entire vehicle is smooth

Clay Alternatives

Clay mitts and towels are faster and reusable, but traditional clay bars offer the most thorough cleaning for coating prep.

Pro Tip: Clay Lubricant

If you run out of dedicated clay lubricant, a quick detailer or even soapy water works in a pinch. Never clay without lubrication-it will mar the paint.

05

Proper Drying Technique

How you dry matters. Water spots from tap water contain minerals that can interfere with coating adhesion.

The Best Drying Method

  1. Use a dedicated drying towel (higher GSM is better)
  2. Pat dry rather than dragging across paint
  3. Work from top to bottom
  4. Use a separate towel for door jambs and lower areas
  5. Blow out water from mirrors, emblems, and trim

Water Spot Prevention

If you have hard water, consider using a water filter on your hose or distilled water for the final rinse. Water spots must be polished out before coating.

Pre-Coating Checklist

Before moving to the coating application, verify your prep work:

Surface Verification

Final Step: IPA Wipe

Even after all this prep, an IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe-down is essential. It removes any remaining oils and ensures the coating has the best possible surface to bond with. See our complete application guide for IPA mix ratios and technique.
